You’re probably aware that search engines rank your site in a number of ways.  One of the key ways your site is ranked by them is by the number of backlinks - or links from other sites to your site.  The reason is simple–it’s kind of like a popularity contest.  If other sites, particularly highly ranked sites, link to your site, that gives it credibility.

As far as backlinks go, the more the better, although it’s best that they are one way links back to you (not reciprocal links) where you each link to one another.  While these links might not actually hurt you (some believe they do), they will at the very least not be counted by Google and other major search engines, so what’s the point?

By now, if you haven’t heard about social bookmarking, Web 2.0 and all the rest, you have probably been under the perverbial rock. (in a hard place?)

• Rankings in the search engines - Google, Yahoo and the rest love social posting, social bookmarking and all the rest of the Web 2.0 world. They reward you with good rankings in the search engines–surprisingly good rankings! A word of caution. Don’t spam the social bookmark sites. This practice will hurt you with the search engines and can hurt this service for everyone on the web. Choose a reasonable number of sites that fit your niche.

Every time you put up new, unique content, this is a great way to get your pages indexed by the search engines, and you could be amazed at how quickly you might find yourself on page one of Google and Yahoo.

Let me count the ways that it wasn’t, and they made my life miserable in ways I hadn’t even dreamed of. And worst of all, absolutely no ability to connect with a human. Never. No matter how bad things got. And the worse things got, the less they responded. Don’t get caught in a trap like this. Make sure your business web hosting company has support people you can talk to.
• Pricing - it’s easy to get caught in picking the lowest cost, and then realizing that other costs are going to pile up as you expand or start adding lots more domains or whatever. Think about where you’re going with your business and ensure that you can expand your web hosting with your business. Best is the ability to add unlimited web domains, but you don’t find that often. You can find good quality cheap web hosting if you do your homework.
• Features - depending on what you’re doing, there are any number of features that you may need to support your business.
